At one time during my early writing career I worked with a married couple and their two very literate kids.
Each one had a specific colored marking pen, and they passed my manuscript from one family member to the other. (they had their own contest going)
I paid them a standard ‘reading’ fee, plus an additional amount for each typo they found.
It took me only three books to be ‘scared straight’ by high fees and forcing myself to re-read each finished manuscript several times before passing it off to them.
As a result, I’ve taught myself how to read like I used to in high school — without understanding — and only look for the typos. After authoring almost 40 books, I’m now a human spell-check robot.
The upside is that I save a lot of proof-reading expense. The downside is that even when I read the New York Times, I have a red pencil in my hand and am constantly ‘on the hunt.’

who like to read (my friend’s children) just about to start high school, and assigned 10 pages to each of them, with a reward offer of one ‘big mac’ for each flagrant typo they found.
